After years of promoting literacy in schools, the League realized a gap still existed between learning at home and school, particularly when it came to reading and writing skills.
Working with Hillsborough County Public Schools, Family Literacy Nights were born. The events feature a variety of hands on activities for children and their families to build literacy together.
This year over 950 children were served at five Hillsborough County Title I Schools (B.C. Graham, USF Patel, DeSoto, Broward & St. Peter Claver). The events made reading fun with themes like “Animal Adoption”, “Under the Sea”, and “Around the World”. More than 1,500 books were distributed to help children build their home libraries and foster a love of reading at home.
